Today we finished rebuilding the clutch. The new friction plates, steel plates, compression springs, gaskets, and ring cushions we ordered finally arrived yesterday. When we took apart the clutch for the first time it was very obvious that the friction and steel plates were very worn out. The friction plates were black, which indicates that they had been burned due to overuse, and the steel plates had discoloring due to the burnt friction plates. The plates were quite literally stuck together, meaning they could not space out in the clutch causing it to slip. We let the new friction plates and steel plates soak in SAE 10W-30 transmission oil (the same transmission oil we put in the engine) for more than 12 hours (12 hours being the minimum amount of time). The installation took about an hour and was successful. The clutch lever gives good resistance when pulled back. We have yet to truly test it by putting it into gear, but we plan to do so soon. Next time we meet, we are planning to take the bike back to Tommy so he can help us fit and install our front brake.
